Steve Lacey, appena uscito di prigione, cerca di ricostruirsi una esistenza. Il malcapitato viene però perseguitato da un poliziotto, il detective Sims, il quale non crede nel suo desiderio di redimersi. La situazione precipiterà quando tre ex compagni di cella, evasi dal carcere di San Quintino, cercheranno rifugio in casa sua e di sua moglie Ellen. Temendo per la vita di quest'ultima, l'uomo cederà alle pressioni dei tre fuggitivi e li seguirà nel tentativo di rapinare una banca.
