John Tyree è un ragazzo dall'indole ribelle e cresciuto senza madre che ha un rapporto tormentato con il padre e con se stesso. Un giorno decide di arruolarsi nell'esercito americano e viene mandato in Europa. Quando torna a casa, per una licenza, incontra Savannah Curtis, studentessa modello e ragazza molto diversa da lui della quale s'innamora, ricambiato. A pochi mesi dal congedo di John però l'America viene colpita dagli attentati terroristici dell'11 settembre 2001 e il ragazzo viene impegnato in missioni di guerra sempre più pericolose in Medioriente. I loro incontri diventano sempre più sporadici e il loro unico contatto è lo scambio di lettere d'amore, una corrispondenza che avrà conseguenze fatali.
