Rob Gordon, proprietario a Chicago del Championship Vinyl, anomalo negozio di dischi pop, è scaricato dall'amata Laura. L'abbandono lo porta a un bilancio dei suoi fallimenti sentimentali, e a crescere. Dal romanzo (1995) di Nick Hornby, sceneggiato in quattro tra cui J. Cusack, anche coproduttore. Strutturata su monologhi spiritosi e un po' autolesionistici, detti dal protagonista guardando in macchina, l'aguzza e garbata commedia si sviluppa a 2 livelli: il negozio con i due maniacali amici-commessi (il calvo Louiso e il frenetico Black) e la sfilata, in flashback o al presente, delle Top Five, le cinque fanciulle che, secondo lui, gli hanno spezzato il cuore.
