Benjamín Esposito, ex pubblico ministero della Procura di Buenos Aires ormai in pensione, decide di rispolverare l'antica passione per la scrittura. Nello scegliere il soggetto a cui ispirarsi per il suo romanzo, l'uomo preferisce attingere alla sua storia professionale piuttosto che affidarsi all'inventiva. Ritorna dunque nel palazzo di Giustizia e chiede a Irene, la sua superiore ancora in servizio, di ridiscutere un controverso caso di violenza sessuale e omicidio consumatosi nella capitale argentina nel 1974, quello della ventitreenne Liliana Coloto. Il tentativo di cancellare l'oblio sul crimine inevitabilmente farà riemergere antiche questioni taciute per troppi anni.
