Il giovane magizoologo Newt Scamander arriva a New York dall'Inghilterra con una valigia piena delle creature fantastiche che ha raccolto e salvato in molti anni di viaggi e ricerche. Senza volere, scambia però il prezioso carico con quello di Jacob Kowalski, pasticcere e No-Mag (è il nome americano dei Babbani), il quale libera inavvertitamente le creature, violando lo Statuto di Segretezza e mettendo Newt nei guai. È il 1926 e il Paese è in grande subbuglio: l'oscuro Gellert Grindewalt è introvabile, qualcosa di misterioso semina caos e distruzione per le strade della città e i fondamentalisti della caccia alle streghe sono sempre più infervorati. Il mondo magico e quello dei No-Mag sono pericolosamente vicini ad entrare in guerra.
