Jerry Mulligan giunge a Parigi dopo la prima guerra mondiale e finalmente nella "ville lumière" può dare sfogo alla sua vera passione: la pittura. Il giovane, bello ed esotico, desta subito l'interesse di una ricca ereditiera che fa collezione di quadri ed amanti. Dopo un breve smarrimento Jerry si accorge che non è fatto per una vita simile e che il denaro lo interessa ben poco. E' invece molto più attratto da Lise, una bella francese giovane e povera. Lise è però a sua volta fidanzata con un pianista perdutamente innamorato di lei.
