La carriera di John Dillinger, specialista di rapine in banca, e la sua lotta con Melvin Purvis, agente dell'FBI implacabile ma cavalleresco. Il duello a distanza si concluse il 22 luglio 1934 a Chicago quando il gangster fu ucciso in una sparatoria. Esordio nella regia di uno sceneggiatore intelligente, è un film senza pietà che rifiuta l'analisi psicologica ed esclude un giudizio morale, con una certa compiaciuta esaltazione del dinamismo della morte violenta.
