Hachi è un cucciolo di razza Akita perduto sulla banchina di una stazione da un facchino sbadato. Approdato in America dal lontano Tibet, Hachi è raccolto dall'abbraccio amorevole di Parker Wilson, insegnante di musica ispirato, marito e padre esemplare. Vincendo le resistenze della moglie, Parker lo accoglie nella sua casa e nella sua vita, scandita dai treni, quello delle otto e quello delle cinque. Hachi, deciso a non perdersi un respiro del suo padrone, lo accompagna ogni mattina al binario e lo attende ogni sera nel piazzale della stazione. Tra una partita degli Yankees e una pallina da baseball mai recuperata, Parker e Hachi condividono il divano, la vasca da bagno e le stagioni. Un avvenimento traumatico interromperà quel quotidiano (stra)ordinario ma non piegherà la fedeltà di Hachi verso l'impegno preso. Aspettare il ritorno e le carezze di Parker.
