Emily é un'assistente sociale che si vede capitare per le mani il caso di Lilith Sullivan, una bambina di dieci anni che viene maltrattata dai genitori. Quando Emily si reca a casa dei Sullivan, non solo accerta la veridicità delle accuse, ma scopre anche che i genitori hanno intenzione di uccidere la bambina. Decide così di prendersi cura della piccola fino a quando il tribunale non le troverà una sistemazione definitiva, e d é da questo momento che Emily capisce che il problema é ben più grosso di quello che si credeva...
