Louisania 1843, Paul Regret (Whitnam), bellimbusto francese, uccide in un duello "galante" il figlio di un giudice, che gli fa dare una caccia spietata. Tocca a J. Carter (Wayne), Ranger del Texas, trovarlo su un battello del Mississippi. Carter sta anche indagando su una misteriosa banda di indiani, i Comanceros. Regret riesce a fuggire, ma il Ranger lo ritrova e lo porta alla base. Regret fugge durante un attacco indiano, ma torna coi rinforzi, guadagnandosi un meritato condono. I due, ormai amici, rintracciano il covo dei Comanceros e riescono a disperdere la banda. Per Regret c'è anche l'amore finale, e forse anche per Carter. Molti gli episodi suggestivi. quando Whitnam cerca di corromperlo, Wayne gli risponde: "Io ho quella che tu forse consideri una debolezza, sono onesto". Quando lo stesso Whitnam, dopo aver salvato tutti, gli chiede di lasciarlo andare l'uomo, della legge gli risponde: "Lo farei, ma ho fatto un giuramento ed è una cosa importante".
