Seconda guerra mondiale. Il giovane ingegnere Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) sposa la sua fidanzata Michiko (Michiyo Aratama) e si sposta con lei dal Giappone in Manciuria, dove ottiene la direzione di una miniera nella quale vengono impiegati come forza lavoro dei prigionieri cinesi. Profondamente animato da uno spirito umanitario e pacifista, Kaji spera così di evitare di dover andare soldato ma al tempo stesso si augura di riuscire a contribuire al miglioramento delle condizioni di vita dei prigionieri. Tuttavia le sue posizioni non incontrano il favore dei suoi superiori, legati ai valori tradizionali e allo spirito militare tipici dell'Impero. Il forte carattere, la testardaggine e la mitezza di Kaji lo porteranno però a insistere nella lotta a favore dei diritti dei prigionieri. Ma la situazione precipiterà quando, in seguito alla fuga di alcuni prigionieri, verrà destituito dal suo incarico e inviato al fronte.
