All'epoca del Vietnam, un giornalista americano si trova a Saigon come corrispondente. Egli pensa di poter risolvere la propria insoddisfacente esistenza mettendosi a trafficare in stupefacenti. Convince così l'amico Raya a portare due chili di eroina fino a Oakland, dove la moglie Marge la piazzerà. Ma i due amici vengono traditi e appena Ray giunge in patria si trova la polizia alle costole. Ray e Marge si danno alla fuga in giro per gli Usa. Intanto torna anche il giornalista e, dopo drammatiche vicende, capirà che è meglio lasciar perdere la professione di spacciatore.
