Nel Far West dei primi del secolo un giornale lancia una gara singolare: darà in premio duemila dollari a chi vincerà una corsa di resistenza a cavallo per settecento miglia. Alla corsa s'iscrivono un cowboy disoccupato, un fallito, un violento, una ex prostituta e altri personaggi singolari. Brooks ha firmato uno dei suoi film più convincenti: l'azione domina sovrana, l'avventura sportiva ha un grande ritmo e l'impresa serve per conoscere meglio le diverse anime dell'America. Bravissimi, in questo western piuttosto atipico, Hackman, Ben Johnson e Candice Bergen.
