La biografia di Frances Farmer, attrice hollywoodiana brava, ma sfortunatissima. Sedicenne, Frances turba il perbenista ambiente di Seattle, negli anni Trenta, con un saggio sulla "morte di Dio", che la fa sospettare di filocomunismo, sospetti aggravati da un viaggio in Urss. La ragazza, che vuol diventare attrice, tenta dapprima la via del teatro, poi quella del cinema. Ma l'ambiente cinematografico, contestato, la distrugge. Frances scende sempre più in basso, sino all'alcolismo ed alla clinica psichiatrica
