Nell’estate del 1979, un gruppo di amici di una piccola cittadina dell’Ohio è testimone di un disastro ferroviario, mentre sono intenti ad effettuare le riprese di un film girato in Super 8 da mostrare ad un festival provinciale. Capiscono subito che non si tratta di un semplice incidente perchè “qualcosa” fugge dal luogo disastro. La questione è talmente importante che la loro cittadina si riempie di militari intenti ad indagare, le persone cominciano a scomparire e strani fatti cominciano ad accadere nella città. Lo sceriffo del posto comincia ad indagare per cercare la verità e si troverà di fronte a qualcosa sconvolgente oltre ogni immaginazione. Alla fine starà ai ragazzi riuscire a mettere insieme i pezzi di una storia che procederà comunque, con o senza il loro intervento, e dalla quale dovranno uscire vivi.
