Carrie è un'adolescente che vive a Pittsburgh ed è costretta a lasciare la città per andare a vivere con il padre Hank (che non vede da molti anni) in un ranch nel Wyoming. Qui la vita le sembra insopportabile ma incontra Flicka, una cavalla mustang che la cugina Katy aveva iniziato a domare. La cavalla è ancora piuttosto selvaggia ma quando salva Carrie dall'attacco di un crotalo conquista la sua attenzione e dedizione. Da quel momento la ragazza, con l'aiuto del giovane cowboy Toby e con l'opposizione del padre, comincerà ad imparare a cavalcarla.
