Storia realmente accaduta e conosciuta come la Guerra per i pascoli della contea di Lincoln. John Simpson Chisum possiede un grande ranch ai confini del Nuovo Messico. Arriva un prepotente che vuol diventare l'incontrastato padrone della zona. Si determina la solita situazione di contrasto fra buoni e cattivi. Da una parte Chisum (con l'aiuto del famoso fuorilegge Billy Kid) cerca di far tornare le cose nell'ordine della "frontiera", dall'altra l'avventuriero, scaltro e senza scrupoli, cerca di sopraffarlo.
