Quando Abdul Karim, un giovane commesso, parte dall’India alla volta dell’Inghilterra per prendere parte al Giubileo d’oro della regina, troverà ad attenderlo i sorprendenti favori della regnante in persona. Mentre la sovrana si ribella alle restrizioni imposte dalla sua posizione, che ormai riveste da lungo tempo, i due stringono un’improbabile e fedele alleanza, fondata su una reciproca lealtà minacciata dalla famiglia reale e dall’ambiente di corte. Man mano che l’amicizia si fa più salda, la regina inizia a vedere il mondo e i suoi mutamenti con occhi nuovi, felice di riappropriarsi del suo lato più umano.
