La storia è ambientata alle Olimpiadi di Monaco del 1972, dove la squadra statunitense perse il campionato di basket per la prima volta dopo 36 anni. Gli ultimi momenti della partita finale sono diventati uno degli eventi più controversi della storia delle Olimpiadi. Con la partita in parità, la tromba del tabellone suonò durante un secondo tentativo di tiro libero che portò gli Stati Uniti in vantaggio di uno. Ma i sovietici sostennero di aver chiesto un time out prima del canestro e si creò confusione. Il cronometro fu riportato indietro di tre secondi per due volte consecutive e alla fine i russi prevalsero all'ultimo. Gli Stati Uniti protestarono, ma una giuria decise in favore dell'URSS e il Team USA votò all'unanimità per rifiutare le medaglie d'argento. I giocatori sovietici sono stati trattati come eroi in patria.
