Tre fratelli che non si parlano da un anno pianificano un viaggio in treno in India, con lo scopo di ritrovare se stessi e il legame reciproco che avevano un tempo.Circa un anno dopo la morte del loro padre e dopo che, apparentemente, hanno deciso di non comunicare più tra loro, Francis, il maggiore, riunisce i diversi fratelli dopo un incidente motociclistico quasi mortale, che lo ha lasciato avvolto da una maschera di bende. Sostenendo che i suoi fratelli sono stati la prima cosa a cui ha pensato quando è tornato cosciente dopo l'incidente, Francis ha organizzato un itinerario accurato e pianificato rigidamente, a bordo di un treno speciale, il Darjeeling Limited, ideato appositamente per provocare nei fratelli una rinascita spirituale che li unisse o che almeno li avvicinasse.
