Il XIX secolo sta per finire, e i Toposkovich (Mousekewitz), una famiglia russa di origini ebraiche, emigrano in America alla ricerca del "sogno americano". Durante una tempesta, Fievel, il secondo figlio, scivola in mare e si ritrova a navigare con mezzi di fortuna. Riesce ad approdare a New York, dove parte alla ricerca della sua famiglia, incontrando vari personaggi come il bislacco ma amichevole gattone Tigre, che diventerà suo inseparabile compagno in tutte le sue avventure, Tony Toponi, topo adolescente conosciuto al suo arrivo, e anche il losco Lucky LoRatto. Il piccolo topolino vivrà un sacco di avventure durante le quali imparerà molto riguardo il paese dov'è approdato, e anche soprattutto che la Speranza è in grado di ridare forza a se stesso e ai propri sogni.
