Una chiesa sconsacrata è il luogo deputato da Alice e Ray per formare un'alternativa comunità che raccoglie i figli orfani della fine degli anni Sessanta. Tra questi c'è Arlo, un giovane rocker che approda alla comunità dopo essere stato cacciato dal college dove si era iscritto, diciottenne, per evitare il servizio militare. L'esperienza di vita in comunità si interrompe per Arlo quando deve tornare a casa dal padre malato. Al ritorno troverà che tutto è cambiato.
