Il veliero Northumberland naufraga in pieno oceano, e gli unici sopravvissuti sono due bambini, Richard ed Emmeline e il cuoco di bordo, l'anziano Paddy. I tre approdano su un'isoletta sperduta, ma dopo un pò di tempo Paddy muore, lasciando i due ragazzini da soli, per fortuna dopo averli addestrati a sopravvivere ed a procacciarsi il cibo.
