A Besançon, in Francia, durante l'occupazione tedesca durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, una giovane vedova, Barny, madre di una bambina, entra un giorno in una Chiesa al fine di esternare in confessione la propria ostilità per la religione cattolica. Il sacerdote, padre Morin, si interessa subito alla donna, comprendendo che questa, un tempo cattolica, aveva perduto la fede. Le presta dei libri, ne discute poi il contenuto, la sollecita ad interessarsi di più al mondo che la circonda. Il prete, poco a poco la riavvicina al cattolicesimo, riuscendo, nello stesso tempo, a combattere efficacemente l'attrazione sentimentale che Barny aveva provato, in un momento di sconforto, per lui.
