Matthew Poncelet è nel braccio della morte in attesa dell'esecuzione. Insieme a un complice ha ucciso e violentato un ragazzo e una ragazza. Chiede di essere assistito da una suora, per avere un minimo di conforto, ma soprattutto per un aiuto nelle varie petizioni di grazia. Petizioni che, una dopo l'altra, cadono. Matthew si proclama innocente. La suora, sconvolta ma coraggiosa, aiuta il giovane, parla con la sua famiglia e con le famiglie dei ragazzi uccisi. Alla fine Matthew confessa di essere lui l'assassino. Così potrà morire con dignità, e libero. Anche la suora ha molto sofferto e imparato. La condanna viene eseguita e illustrata in tutti i dettagli, secondo dopo secondo, siringa dopo siringa.
