James Bond è impegnato in un'esercitazione durante la quale però deve eliminare un agente che gli ha sparato sul serio. Dopo questo prologo viene inviato a Bratislava per organizzare la defezione di Georgi Koskov, un generale del Kgb. Qui sventa un attentato organizzato da una graziosa violoncellista-spia. Si reca quindi in Afghanistan dove scopre che dietro a tutto si cela proprio Koskov. 007, dopo le gloriose stagioni Connery e Moore, si è riciclato nei panni di Timothy Dalton: ne risente la mitologia del personaggio, ma non la spettacolarità del suo cinema.
