Billy ha undici anni, è orfano di madre e vive con il padre e il fratello, entrambi minatori. Costretto dal padre a fare pugilato, scopre in realtà una grande passione per la danza, scontrandosi con i pregiudizi dell'epoca (gli anni '80) che vedono nella danza maschile una pratica omosessuale, e nell'essere omosessuali una colpa.
