Nella Virginia dei primi anni del proibizionismo i tre fratelli Bondurant distillano e vendono clandestinamente alcolici, prima fuori città, senza immischiarsi con i gangster che si ammazzano tra loro per le strade, poi alzando il rischio e il tenore degli affari, quando anche il più giovane dei tre, Jack, trova il coraggio che inizialmente sembrava non avere. L'arrivo da Chicago di Charlie Rakes, rappresentante della legge corrotto e feroce, mette però i fratelli Bonduant sulla strada di una guerra inevitabile e all'ultimo sangue.
