Lee Blanchard e Bucky Bleichert sono poliziotti nella Los Angeles del 1947. Ex pugili in categorie differenti si incontrano e si scontrano sul ring e nella vita, dove condividono una donna e un'ossessione. La prima è la bionda e raffinata Kay, compagna di Blanchard e prostituta riabilitata, la seconda è Betty Ann Short, la Dalia Nera, prostituta perduta perché assassinata e orribilmente mutilata sotto le lettere che comporranno il suo epitaffio (Hollywoodland). La ricerca dell'assassino della Dalia, braccato e scovato sotto la polvere di stelle della città degli angeli, condurrà i due investigatori lontano da qualsiasi forma di moderazione emotiva e professionale. Ombre del e dal passato e amori illeciti dal sapore necrofilo finiranno per consumarli e per determinarne la sorte, opposta come il ghiaccio e il fuoco.
