Sara, una giovane ragazza bianca, è un'aspirante ballerina di danza classica, che sogna di entrare alla Juillard, la prestigiosa scuola di ballo di New York. Derek è invece un ragazzo di colore che aspira a diventare medico. I due si incontrano nel liceo del South Side di Chicago, dove Sara si è trasferita dopo la morte della madre, e si innamorano. Famiglia e amici, specialmente di Derek, ostacoleranno i due ragazzi, i quali però alla fine usciranno vincitori da questa lotta per affermare le loro aspirazioni e i loro sentimenti.
