Stato del Vermont (Stati Uniti), 1959: nel college maschile Welton, molto tradizionale, viene trasferito il professore John Keating, un insegnante di lettere simpatico e anticonformista. Fin dal primo contatto con i giovani allievi, traspare non solo il suo diverso modo d'insegnamento ma anche il suo approccio che esorta i ragazzi ad affrontare lo studio e la vita seguendo le proprie idee e non quelle dei nonni. Uno degli studenti, entrato in conflitto con i suoi genitori, si suiciderà. La responsabilità viene fatta ricadere sul professore. Lui sarà cacciato, ma i suoi allievi non lo dimenticheranno.
