It was May of 1941, the producer of our radio show asked if I'd take the show out of its Hollywood studio for one show at March Field, one of our air bases in Riverside California. I said 'what for? there was no war going on. Why should we drag the show down there?' I was resisting an idea that was to change my whole life. We had no idea that we were gonna discover an audience so ready for laughter.
