Alan Parrish:
My dad used to make shoes here. They were the best shoes in New England.
[sees a shadowy figure smoking a pipe in his dad's upstairs office and gasps]

Alan Parrish:
Hey!
[bolts past Judy and Peter, up the stairs and into the office; a towering, bearded bum looks at him]

Alan Parrish:
Sorry.
[a dog growls at Alan and stands up on its mattress]

Shoe Factory Bum:
Easy, girl.
[the dog stays]

Alan Parrish:
Do you know what happened to this shoe factory?
Shoe Factory Bum:
Yeah, folded up... like everything else in this town. It's, uh, pretty cold out there. How about some coffee?
[Judy and Peter enter the office]

Alan Parrish:
Why would they close Parrish Shoes?
Shoe Factory Bum:
When his kid ran away, Sam put everything he had into trying to find him. His time, his money, everything.
[Alan looks heartbroken]

Shoe Factory Bum:
After a while, he stopped coming to work. He just quit caring. Ah, I don't think anybody loved his boy more than Sam did. Here.
[puts down his mug and hands Alan a coat and pants]

Shoe Factory Bum:
You're gonna freeze out there.
Alan Parrish:
[takes the clothes]
Thank you. Are the Parrishes still around?
Shoe Factory Bum:
I see 'em now and then.
Alan Parrish:
[delighted]
Yeah?
Shoe Factory Bum:
They're over on Adams Street.
[Alan's smile fades]
