Sadie Thompson:
Mr. Davidson, the governor said I could go to Sydney, instead of San Francisco, if it's all right with you.
Sadie Thompson:
[Davidson remains silent]
Please, Mr. Davidson, don't send me back to San Francisco.
Sadie Thompson:
[Davidson asks her why]
There's a man there won't let me go straight.
Alfred Davidson:
Would he need to know you had returned?
Sadie Thompson:
He'd know all right! They're watching all the boats.
Alfred Davidson:
[suddenly getting a diabolically gleeful look on his face]
The man you fear wears a uniform and a badge! You're afraid of the penitentiary!
Sadie Thompson:
But I was framed - - I'm innocent - please - please - - give me another chance!
Alfred Davidson:
Yes, Sadie. I will give you a chance - when you are ready to atone.
Sadie Thompson:
I'll do *anything* if you'll just let me go to Sydney.
Alfred Davidson:
No, Sadie - you've got to go back - - to prison.
Sadie Thompson:
Even if I'm innocent?
Alfred Davidson:
Yes.
Sadie Thompson:
[looking utterly defeated]
This is my finish.
Alfred Davidson:
No, Sadie - - this is your beginning!
