Lu Clayton:
[about Harry Gilmore, who has just passed away without repaying Sam the $180 he loaned him]
I'm sure he was a wonderful man, but don't you think at times you have too much faith in people?
Sam Clayton:
Lu, how can you have too much faith in people?
Lu Clayton:
I know it sounds terrible, but people impose on you. You're a soft touch. You always said you could picture you and me by our own fireside. Well a hundred eighty dollars would build a pretty nice fireplace in the home we're never going to get.
Sam Clayton:
Look Lu, I don't regret it. Harry Gilmore was a fine man.
[Lu sarcastically nods in agreement]
Sam Clayton:
He happened to need some money, and I saw that he got it.
Lu Clayton:
[in mock agreement]
Of course.
Sam Clayton:
Everybody thinks well of Harry Gilmore. Name one thing wrong with Harry Gilmore.
Lu Clayton:
[matter-of-factly]
His health!
