Sam Vernon:
[appears unexpectedly at the motel room where Jerry and Emily are unpacking, enters, looks around]
So... this is your place.
Jerry Vernon:
Nobody asked you.
Sam Vernon:
That's right... nobody asked me. What rent do you pay?
Jerry Vernon:
Seventy a month.
Sam Vernon:
Money's nothing to you, huh?
Jerry Vernon:
Is that what you came about?
Sam Vernon:
How'd you get my signature?
Jerry Vernon:
I traced it.
Sam Vernon:
Do you know what that is? You know what it is to forge somebody's name!
Jerry Vernon:
The money belonged to me, you put it in there for me!
Sam Vernon:
I still have to sign the checks!
Jerry Vernon:
I'm gonna give it back to you, I don't want *anything* from you, not anymore!
[Sam slaps Jerry hard; Jerry, shocked, whimpers and breathes hard]
Sam Vernon:
Give me back the money.
Jerry Vernon:
[hesitates]
I spent some of it, I bought a ring and paid the rent here.
Sam Vernon:
That's all right, we'll chalk it up to experience, give me the rest.
Jerry Vernon:
No!
Sam Vernon:
That was the first time I ever hit you, but so help me, if you don't give me that money I'll pay-, I'll beat you to a pulp!
Jerry Vernon:
[sniveling and shouting]
I'm not a sniveling kid anymore and nobody's gonna talk to me that way, you or nobody!
Sam Vernon:
[shouting]
I said give me back the money! I'm not gonna let you throw your life away because you can't keep out of bed with a girl!
Jerry Vernon:
[screaming]
SHUT UP! SHUT UP AND GET OUT OF HERE!
[Jerry pushes Sam towards the door, but Sam shoves Jerry down to the floor. Jerry, whimpering, gets up and punches Sam twice. Sam punches Jerry back and knocks him to the floor]
Sam Vernon:
[sobbing]
Go on, keep it. If you want it so bad, keep it. I don't care anymore what happens.
[leaves]
