Dr. Dan Davidge:
I was thinking of Ruth the other... How old is Ruth now?
Amy Harper:
You oughta know, you brought her into the world.
Dr. Dan Davidge:
Yes, but I brought so many others in since. I'm a bit confused.
Amy Harper:
She was seventeen, two weeks ago.
Dr. Dan Davidge:
Hmm, you've had a lot of intimate talks with her, of course?
Amy Harper:
Why, of course. Ruth and I are like sisters. What do you mean?
Dr. Dan Davidge:
I mean you've told her all the things she's old enough to know.
Amy Harper:
Dan Davidge, do you mean that I should tell her...?
[he nods]

Amy Harper:
Well, I'm surprised at you. Knowing me the way you do, that you should even suggest such a thing. You know how I've brought up my girl, and I don't intend to put vulgar thoughts into her mind by... by discussing things with her as if she were, well, a married woman.
Dr. Dan Davidge:
Still, I think I would assure her in a nice motherly way that it's possible to become a mother without a wedding ring.
Amy Harper:
Dan Davidge, you're horrible! You're a rank materialist!
Dr. Dan Davidge:
I'm sorry, Amy, I live a material life. All life is material from the beginning to the end. I love your children as much as if they were my own and it's nonsense to assume they know things. How could they know it, save through experience?
