Detective John Norton:
[together at the pub]
The Ambassador didn't need you any longer?
Mandel:
[smoking his cigar]
So, you know too, huh? Almost three weeks ago, he said, "With my conjunctivitis, I couldn't drive anymore." Mm-hmm. Only, he has to pay me what he owes me. He thinks he can take advantage of me because he's a diplomat on foreign soil. But he doesn't know the likes of me.
Mandel:
[violently raises his right fist]
I will knock his block off even if they put me INSIDE for it, you know that? And... that FUCKING BASTARD!
Detective John Norton:
And why didn't they give you a month's notice?
Mandel:
[sips in a pint of beer]
I, I don't know. It was twenty days ago. That's why I'm sitting here, free as the air without a penny in my pocket, you know.
Detective John Norton:
Twenty days ago... That'd be right after the murder, then?
Mandel:
[sighs]
Yes. yes, you are right, now that I think of it.
Mandel:
[putting on fragmented glasses underneath the cigarette box]
You smoke?
Detective John Norton:
Uh-uh.
Detective John Norton:
[looks at the fragmented glasses]
No, I don't.
Mandel:
[dramatic music plays and Mandel looks at his fragmented glasses in disbelief]
Oh... they got broken when I got off the bus. Some bastard gave me a shove, you know? Uh, I heard the crack but I didn't take any notice at the time, and, uh...
Detective John Norton:
[pauses]
When are you pulling out?
Mandel:
Why?
Detective John Norton:
Nothing. I might just want to have another word with you, you never know.
Detective John Norton:
[takes Mandel's broken eyeglasses]
I'm sorry you're broke, you know. I'll take these with me and have them fixed.
