Chris è un adolescente che cresce come il maggiore di tre figli a Brooklyn, New York, all'inizio degli anni '80. Sradicato in un nuovo quartiere e portato in autobus in una scuola media prevalentemente bianca a due ore di distanza dai suoi genitori severi e laboriosi, Chris fatica a trovare il suo posto mentre tiene in riga i suoi fratelli a casa e supera le sfide delle medie.
