In his interview for the Archive of American Television and Radio, set designer Garvin Eddy explained how he designed the set of the Foreman house in the series. Although the show is set sometime in the mid 1970's Eddy explained that you had to be careful not to furnish the house in the most current mid 1970's style. Eddy explained that the Foreman's have been living in their house since at least the 1950's. People of the Foreman's generation when buying commodities such as furniture, appliances, electronics, carpeting, drapes etc, usually kept them for decades as opposed today when renovating houses and replacing furniture and home decor is more common. The Foreman's house far from being the center of high mid 1970's style would still have many 1950's and 1960's furnishings and decor, thus that's how Eddy decorated their house.
