The series is not based on the feature film Buffy - L'ammazzavampiri (1992), but Joss Whedon's original screenplay, which had been heavily re-written to be more comedic. The Buffy comic book series adapted the screenplay, bringing the events of the movie in-line with the television show's continuity.
