When the series transitioned into first run syndication in 1987 it was decided to replace most of the major characters outside of Charles and Buddy. The Pembroke's were replaced by the Powell's. Only three characters from the 1984 version reprised their roles briefly in the 1987 version. Michael Pearlman, who played Jason Pembroke, appeared in the first episode of season two "Amityville" when it was revealed that the Pembroke's have to unexpectedly move to Seattle and are renting the house out to the Powell's. Lisa Donovan reprises the character of Jill Pembroke in that episode, however, Jill Pembroke was originally played by Julie Cobb in the 1984 version. The only other character from the 1984 version to appear in the 1987 one is Jennifer Runyon who appeared as Charles girlfriend Gwendolyn in one 1987 episode before disappearing from the series altogether.
