Dean Corso (Lucas Corso, in the novel), is far more likable in the film. In the book, Corso's activities are downright illegal, often using the Ceniza brothers to erase or forge library seals and other marks and even changing illustrated pages. Apart from the first scene, film's Corso is not particularly dishonest, yet everyone treats him as such. This leads to a dropped plot in the film, in which is revealed that Baroness Kessler is actually a former Nazi criminal, and Corso blackmails her with pictures of her with high rank Nazi officials to force his way into the Kessler collection. Without this scene, the movie portrays Kessler giving access to her library to a notorious shady character who, on top of it, is working for her rival.
