Dean Corso, esperto di libri rari (Johnny Depp), viene incaricato dal ricco collezionista Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) di verificare se un prezioso libro del 1666 (Le nove porte del regno dele tenebre) che possiede è autentico. Per farlo dovrebbe verificare le sole altre due copie esistenti perché una delle tre potrebbe essere falsa: la sua, Balkan l’ha acquistata da un collezionista, Telfer (Willy Holt), che poi si è suicidato. La vedova di Telfer (Lena Olin) afferma di non saperne niente, ma si comporta in modo strano e anche violento. Corso prosegue la ricerca in Europa, dapprima in Spagna e poi a Parigi, sempre circondato da un’aura misteriosa e da avvenimenti tenebrosi. In più, c’è una ragazza (Emmanuelle Seigner) che gli ronza intorno.
