The three copies of the book in the film survived the burning of Torkia's works because they each had three of the nine Engravings by the Devil inside them. When those engravings were torn out the books could be destroyed. This gives us a clue in the form of the discoloration on the back of Balkan's copy that it didn't contain all three authentic "LCF" engravings. Thus the back of the book, closest to the forged engraving, was susceptible to damage.
