The original title for this sitcom was Teenage Wasteland, named after the 1971 hit from the Who, "Baba O'reilly", about teenagers tuning out of society. While this was definitely an appropriate title, given the subject matter, it also might have been too risque for network television. (Since the boys did smoke pot all the time in that smoking circle; although even that was only hinted; we never saw the cigarette or the smoking!) So the title was changed to the very mehta That 70s Show; since this was coming out hot on the heels of Scream and Mehta was very in all of the sudden in 1998.
