Chuck Norris was the initial choice for Red Forman, but was still filming Walker Texas Ranger (1993), so Kurtwood Smith was cast instead. The idea was to have a hyper masculine actor be cast as Red to serve as the foil to Eric Forman, a scrawny nerd and geek with no traditionally masculine interests like sports.
