In February 2021, several actresses who had been regulars on Buffy the Vampire Slayer came forward with allegations that Joss Whedon had been abusive and/or inappropriate toward them during their working relationships. On February 10, 2021, Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia) put a long post on her social media accounts detailing ways that Whedon "abused his power on numerous occasions" on the sets of Buffy and Angel and created a "hostile and toxic work environment." She said he refused to take multiple calls from her representatives who were attempting to inform him when she was pregnant, and then when he did find out, he behaved in a retaliatory manner (he asked if she planned to get an abortion, mocked her normal pregnancy weight gain, refused to comply with reasonable medical accommodations during the pregnancy, and then fired her after she gave birth). After Carpenter's post, Amber Benson (Tara) voiced her support for and agreement with Carpenter: "Buffy was a toxic environment and it starts at the top. [Carpenter] is speaking truth and I support her 100%. There was a lot of damage done during that time and many of us are still processing it twenty plus years later." Sarah Michele Gellar (Buffy) added, "While I am proud to have my name associated with Buffy Summers, I don't want to be forever associated with the name Joss Whedon....I stand with all survivors of abuse and am proud of them for speaking out." And in response to that post, Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn) said, "Thank you [Sarah Michelle Gellar] for saying this. I am brave enough now as a 35 year old woman....To repost this. Because. This must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior....very. Not. Appropriate. So now. People know. What Joss. Did. The last. Comment I will make on this. Was. There was a rule. Saying. He's not allowed in a room alone with Michelle again."
