The theme is actually Cheap Trick's cover of an old "Big Star" single from 1972; "In The Street." Cheap Trick ironically cut out the chorus in this version, "Out in The Street." Season 1 was sung by Cheap Trick alone; in Seasons 2 through 8 the cast (allegedly) sang background vocals. Fox and Carsey/Werner had originally wanted a 70s song about teenagers to be the theme song, and the title. Early contenders were the Who classics "Kids Are Alright" and "Baba Oreilly/Teenage Wasteland". Teenage Wasteland might have been dropped because Kevin Williamson was developing a TV show about young adults called Wasteland during this time; and there was a Wasteland movie in the works in the late 90s also. And rumor had it licensing issues slowed down some of this stuff. Finally the producers pulled together some marketing data from kids who watched the show; who all referred to the show as "That 70s Show" in their surveys. So Carsey/Werner decided to call it that, and to just use a cool but unrelated 70s song as the theme song. "We're all alright! We're all alright!" Is the seemingly random non sequitur last line of the theme song. It is probably inspired partially by Cheap Trick's classic song about teenage angst, Surrender. The chorus of that famous song is "Mommy's Alright! Daddy's Alright! They just just seem a little weird! Surrender! Surrender! But don't give yourself away!" The other thing that might have inspired "We're All Alright" is of course The Kids Are Alright, one of the original titles of the show.
