Sergeant Walter Harriman was loosely based on Walter "Radar" O'Reilly from "MASH (1972)." Throughout the series, we see Walter display many Radar-like qualities, particularly his ability to respond the requests of his superiors before being asked. Coincidentally, both characters were portrayed by actors named Gary.
